Charlie Needs Braces sings about GuriNgai’s totem and story in new single ‘Daryung’ + announces Melbourne launch show

Naarm based performer Charlie Woods ventures out on her own launching her new solo project ‘Charlie Needs Braces’ with the energetic and emotive track ‘Daryung’. A proud GuriNgai woman, descendant of Bungaree and Matora, Charlie shares the first taste off her upcoming debut album. No stranger to Australia’s thriving live music scene, Charlie’s talents as a trumpeter are widely known, from sharing stages with the likes of The Teskey BrothersGang of YouthsThe Seven Ups, TEK TEK Ensemble’, ‘WVR BABY’, which have taken her across the globe. While ‘Daryung’ is just the beginning of a vocal and brass focused musical experience, Charlie Needs Braces is a project ripe with stories ready to share with a hope of connecting and unifying the community. In celebration of the release Charlie will be performing a one off show at Melbourne’s Natural Habitat Studios this August showcasing her unreleased gems.

Out today, ‘Daryung’ is the first single lifted from an album that draws on Charlie’s experience of discovering and learning about her Aboriginal heritage, and her encounters with her new braces. The “Daryung”, also known as the stingray, is the GuriNgai mob’s totem and their ancestor Bungaree would always throw the “Daryung” back into the water when fishing as it was his role to protect and tend to the waters.

These stories have led to the exploration of influences in Charlie’s life as a musician and the meaning behind this track. “The Daryung is of great importance to us as it represents our people and carries our stories down through generations. Our spirits and ancestors live on through the Daryung, and I have a great sense of pride and joy when I sing this song. Through celebrating my culture and sharing my ancestors’ stories I can continue my cultural journey and solidify my identity as a GuriNgai woman.”

The musical composition of ‘Daryung’ showcases Charlie’s seasoned musicianship arranging and playing horns along with her distinct vocals, with inspired additions from her little sister Miri Woods (backing vocals), Arthur Day (Yidaki), and Michael Saxall (Percussion). Produced and recorded by Mr.Kapow alongside Charlie, the single perfectly captures the looped live essence of her new solo show.

Since graduating the VCA, Charlie has appeared on Spicks and Specks, The Set, and the Channel 9 Morning Show with The Teskey Brothers as well as Australian festivals Splendour in the Grass, Womadelaide and Blues Fest. As Charlie Needs Braces she has graced the stages of Melbourne Music Week, St Kilda Film Festival, Firelight Festival, supported The Seven Ups for their latest album launch, and Ziggy Ramo.

Whether performing solo or with a full band, multi-instrumentalist Charlie’s live performance of experimentation with looping Trombone, Trumpet, Drums, Percussion and Vocals live are not to be missed. ‘Daryung’ Lyrics:
Sunlight hits the water warming up those dark and empty places.

Your reflection hits the water and you see you’ve gone and got all dark and murky.

And you wanna feel free, to flap around, and feel the heartbeat, and you wanna swim out there, breathe in, breathe out.

Like the Daryung

Sunlight hits the water warming up those dark and empty places you’ve been.

Your reflection hits the water and your dreams come tumbling out from every corner.

And you wanna feel free, to flap around, and feel the heartbeat, and you wanna swim out there, breathe in, breathe out.
